2016/17 VJBL

What is Junior Jets?

Junior Jets is the opportunity for your child to take their basketball to the next level and compete in Australia’s largest junior competition, The Melbourne United Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL). VJBL is played on a Friday night in a large range of venues across the state. Each week over 1000 junior teams compete to be the best in state. This equates to over 500 games across 150 courts. This is the breeding ground for Victorian State players and many successful players have come out of this system; Mathew Dellavedova, Andrew Bogut, Andrew Gaze, Penny Taylor and Michelle Timms just to name a few. Competing in such a prestigious competition instils in your child a sense of pride, raises self-esteem, and will develop new friendships that will last a life time.

Jets teams are selected via a tryout process. During the VJBL Season Sunbury Jets team play against a range of other associations such as Melbourne Tigers, Geelong Supercats, and Diamond Valley Eagles. Once selected Jets players are required to train twice a week (generally one session on a Sunday and the other mid-week). The representative Jets program is available for all SBA domestic players. Jets players DO NOT have to leave their domestic teams to play.

This is your chance to represent the Sunbury Basketball Association in one of the following divisions:

  • Victorian Junior State Championship (VC) (Top teams go to national champs)
  • Victorian Junior Basketball League (Div 1,2,3, & 4)
  • North West Regional Competition

2017 D1M Head Coach Signing

The Sunbury Jets are extremely excited to announce that NBL Legend and Sydney Kings Assistant Coach Lanard Copeland is the newest addition to the Jets program.

After a long and successful playing career, playing college basketball at Georgia State University and in the NBA for the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Clippers. Lanard made the shift to Australia to play in the NBL with the Melbourne Tigers, where he played 449 games for club over 14 seasons, won two championships and a NBL Grand Final MVP award in 1997. Lanard also played at the Brisbane Bullets and Adelaide 36ers before retiring at the end of the 2007-08 season.

Since retiring as a player Lanard has been putting his playing experiences to great use mentoring young players at the Australian College of Basketball, Haileybury College and Coaching the Big V State Champ Hume City Broncos’ men’s team.

Director of Coaching Kennedy Kereama had this to say about Lanards appointment;

“We are very pleased to have Lanard committed to our men’s program and believe that he will have a huge impact around the club. A Coach with Lanard’s playing background and experience doesn’t get presented to you everyday. We have many young Jets players who all aspire to play in the NBL and NBA, so it makes sense to bring in a guy who knows what it takes to play at that level.”

Lanard will join the Jets at the conclusion of the 2016/17 NBL season. The club will be working closely with Lanard to appoint a coaching staff that can assist him until his arrival in 2017.

“Lanard is at an exciting stage of his coaching career. Working in the NBL with a great coaching staff comprising of Andrew Gaze and Dean Vickerman at Sydney Kings. He will be learning a great deal from his experience with them and I’m sure will be hungry to implement some of his learning’s to our men’s team at Sunbury.”

The men’s program will be having open scrimmages on Sunday nights at Boardman Stadium from 6:00pm – 8:00pm starting this week 13th of November.

The club will also be looking for expressions of interest for the position of Team Manager of the D1M team. All interested applications are encouraged to send their resumes to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Further more the club would like to thank former Head Coach Andrew Summerville for his outstanding contribution to the men’s program in 2016. We wish him all the very best in his future endeavours.
