2017 Big V Wrap

We have now rapped up our season of BigV and what a season it has been. We congratulate both the SCW and YL2W on winning the championship for their competitions. We also congratulate the YL1M who made the finals however unfortunately lost in the Semi’s and we congratulate the D1M for their efforts on the court this season.

It was Sunbury’s first season in the SCW. Our women lead the competition beginning the season 11-0. They suffered their first loss in round 12. They suffered another three losses for the remainder of the season finishing 16-4 and on top of the ladder. They went on to play Know Raiders in a tough Semi Finals Series. They went to three games, Knox taking the first but Sunbury taking the win in games two and three. They then faced the Bulleen Boomers in the Grand Final series and what a physical series it was. Sunbury took the win in game 1 finishing 71-65. Game two at the Hanger was much closer Sunbury winning 55-54. Courtney Duever won the MVP finishing with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Josie Stockill contributed 16 points and 7 rebounds. Monique Stevens helped turn the game around hitting two big 3’s. We also congratulate Kennedy, Courtney, Chelsea and Orla who have been nominated for BigV awards. Congratulations to Kennedy and his coaching staff, players and others that contributed to the team. The association would like to thank the SCW players for always volunteering their time to assist in our junior programs that run throughout the club.

The D1M had a tough season this season. We welcomed Lanard Copeland as our head coach. The D1M finished the season in 5th position, falling just two games short of the finals. Their season ended 7 wins and 12 losses. We are proud of their efforts through this re-building phase. We congratulate   Javari and Jacob on their nominations for BigV awards.

The YL2W had a strong season finishing on top of the ladder with 18-2. The girls finished the home and away season with an 11-0 run. The YL2W had a tough finals series. Their Semi Final series against Southern Peninsula Sharks went to three games. Sunbury took the win in game 1, Southern Pen took the win in game two and it went to a game three which the Sunbury girls won. The Grand Final series was again a tough series. Blackburn were 1 of 2 team which defeated our girls throughout the home and away season. The girls came out fighting hard in the first game winning 67-40. Game two was much closer Sunbury winning 52-48. Chloe Angove received the MVP award finishing with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Emily Achter contributed with 14 points. Both Adele Rogers and Kirby Elliott finished with 10 rebounds each. We congratulate Andrew and Chloe A for being nominated for BigV awards. Congratulations to Andrew, his staff and the players on their achievement.

The YL1M finished their season in third position with a record of 15-7. The boys worked hard all season to get the results they wanted, they played 6 double headers for the season which would have been a hard test for all. The YL1M played their first final against Warrandyte Venom and won by 10 points. Kyle Collins had 23 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Nathan Baker finished with 14 points, 11 rebound, 7 assist, 3 steals and 1 block. In their second finals the boys found themselves up against Werribee Devils, it was a tough game which saw our boys go down by 18 points. We would like to congratulate Lisa, Jeremy, Nathan and Kyle who have all been nominated for BigV awards.

We would like to thank everyone who assists in allowing our BigV players to get on the court. We would like to thank the volunteers who work behind the scenes to allow this program to run and do so well. We would also like to thank the supports who come and watch our Sunbury teams play each week.

2017 YL1M Head Coach Announcement

YL1M Head Coach Announcement

The Sunbury Jets are excited to announce the appointment of Lisa Townsend as Head Coach of the YL1M program for the 2017 season.

Townsend, who served as an Assistant Coach to the Jets D1W Championship winning side in 2016 has a wide range of elite playing and coaching experience. Lisa has coached and played in the WNBL, SEABL, been involved in numerous state team sides and coached successful junior teams of both genders.

Director of Coaching Kennedy Kereama is delighted with the announcement.

“After working with Lisa at both Big V and SEABL level, I know she will get the best out of this group of young men we have in our program. Lisa has played and coached the game to the highest of levels and is a strong acquisition to our men’s program.”

“I am a little sad to be losing Lisa from our senior women’s program, but also think that a coach of her credentials and success should be Head Coach of a senior side. Our YL1M players have an incredible opportunity to learn from a very experienced coach.”

Open try outs will be held every Sunday, starting on the 6th of November until late December:

2017 YL2W Head Coach Announcement

YL2W Head Coach Announcement

Sunbury Jets are pleased to announce the reappointment of Andrew Siedel as Head Coach of the YL2W program for the 2017 season.

Andrew’s reappointment comes off two very successful campaigns in 2015 and 2016, making playoff appearances in both seasons. In 2015 Andrew was named YL2W Coach of the Year and has become an important member in our pathway from junior to senior basketball.

Director of Coaching Kennedy Kereama is delighted with the announcement.

“We are thrilled to reappoint Andrew to this position. He has had some great results over the past couple of seasons and done a great job of promoting players from his YLW team to our D1W program.”

“Andrew has invested a great deal of time over the past 12 months to better himself and continues to show improvement in his coach development. Now that our senior women’s team being promoted to state championship women, we believe Andrew is the right person to continue identifying players from our junior program, developing them and getting them ready for the demands of SCW basketball.”

2017/18 Jets VJBL Coaching Appointments

The Sunbury Jets Basketball Association is pleased to announce the coaches for the 2017/18 VJBL Junior Jets representative season.

After a rigorous process the Junior Jets committee has appointed a strong field of coaches across all age groups. We are extremely happy with the retention rate from last year and the program is going from strength to strength. We have appointed coaches with WNBL and State team experience as well as Big V and Basketball Victoria High Performance coaches.

After a review that took place in 2016/17, the SBA will again be implementing the same policy in regards to selection of players and coaches. This year the SBA is not allocating coaches to specific teams until after the trials. This is to ensure we uphold the highest possible amount of integrity and transparency in our player selection process. Additionally all try-outs are closed to non-coaching parents to prevent any influence or manipulation of coaches or players during the trials.

The player selection panel will be made up of the coaches in that age group and the following panel members:

Kennedy Kereama – SBA Director of Coaching

Chris Tighe – SBA Junior Development Officer

Josiah Smith – State Championship Women’s’ Assistant Coach

Once teams have been selected the coaches will be assigned to the team that their qualifications, experience and ability is best suited to in that specific age group. Parent coaches only willing to coach their children will be assigned to the team their child is selected for. It is also important for all participants to understand that this year from the age groups of U16’s to U18’s there may only two teams per age group or less dependent on player or coach numbers. There are a number of reasons why the SBA has come to this decision. The primary motivation behind this decision is that we would like to have more coaching resources available to coaches and players who make either a one or two’s team in these age groups.

This year the SBA will be endeavouring to appoint an age group mentor to each age group. This person will offer support by attending various trainings and games and in some age groups this may be an independent person who will not be an appointed coach. However in some cases may be a coach within the age group already. After experimenting last year with our first team coaches being the age group coordinator, we will be implementing this again. It is expected that the age group coordinator will assist in networking and resource sharing with all coaches in their age group. They will monitor the players in all teams in their age group and offer support and suggestions to help all improve. They will also be expected to work with age group mentor coaches. It is expected that all teams in the age group will adopt similar philosophies, strategies and tactics in line with the “Jets Style of Play” and coach’s handbook produced by Kennedy Kereama and Chris Tighe.

It is mandatory for all coaches and assistant coaches who have not completed a National Coaches Accreditation to do so before commencing coaching this season.

Please see the link below the 2017/18 Jets Coaches & a brief outline of their experience (in no particular order).
