The Sunbury Jets are excited to announce the appointment of Lisa Townsend as Head Coach of the YL1M program for the 2017 season.

Townsend, who served as an Assistant Coach to the Jets D1W Championship winning side in 2016 has a wide range of elite playing and coaching experience. Lisa has coached and played in the WNBL, SEABL, been involved in numerous state team sides and coached successful junior teams of both genders.

Director of Coaching Kennedy Kereama is delighted with the announcement.

“After working with Lisa at both Big V and SEABL level, I know she will get the best out of this group of young men we have in our program. Lisa has played and coached the game to the highest of levels and is a strong acquisition to our men’s program.”

“I am a little sad to be losing Lisa from our senior women’s program, but also think that a coach of her credentials and success should be Head Coach of a senior side. Our YL1M players have an incredible opportunity to learn from a very experienced coach.”

2018 Jnr Jets

What is Junior Jets?

Junior Jets is the opportunity for your child to take their basketball to the next level and compete in Australia’s largest junior competition, The Melbourne United Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL). VJBL is played on a Friday night in a large range of venues across the state. Each week over 1000 junior teams compete to be the best in state. This equates to over 500 games across 150 courts. This is the breeding ground for Victorian State players and many successful players have come out of this system; Mathew Dellavedova, Andrew Bogut, Andrew Gaze, Penny Taylor and Michelle Timms just to name a few. Competing in such a prestigious competition instils in your child a sense of pride, raises self-esteem, and will develop new friendships that will last a life time.

Jets teams are selected via a tryout process. During the VJBL Season Sunbury Jets team play against a range of other associations such as Melbourne Tigers, Geelong Supercats, and Diamond Valley Eagles. Once selected Jets players are required to train twice a week (generally one session on a Sunday and the other mid-week). The representative Jets program is available for all SBA domestic players. Jets players DO NOT have to leave their domestic teams to play.

This is your chance to represent the Sunbury Basketball Association in one of the following divisions:

  • Victorian Junior State Championship (VC) (Top teams go to national champs)
  • Victorian Junior Basketball League (Div 1,2,3, & 4)
  • North West Regional Competition

During the VJBL season each Jets player will get access to quality coaching from qualified coaches. We are lucky enough to have access to coaches who have worked at the highest levels of the sport.

PLAYER SIGNING ANNOUNCEMENT

The Sunbury Jets are very pleased to announce that D1W All-Star five player Monique Stevens has re-signed for the 2017 State Championship season.

In 2016 the dynamic guard averaged 13.6 points per game with 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2.3 steals and had a shooting average of 35% from behind and arc and 71.4% from the free throw line.

Coach Kennedy Kereama had this to say about Monique’s re-signing;

“I am very pleased to have Monique back with us again. She played a very pivotal role in our team last season and was easily the most efficient point guard in our league. She had the task of distributing the ball to a number of scorers in our team, getting us through our offence, controlling the tempo and at times took on some very big defensive tasks.

“There were games were she would out rebound the opposition on her own. Her ability to win possession through her fierce rebounding skills and her incredible on and off ball defensive positioning made us a real possession winning team.”

After spending the off season working hard on her game in the gym and on court with coach Kennedy she is ready to help take the club into the State Championship Division.

“Monique shows determination, is a competitor and always wants to get better. I was a little surprised that a WNBL team didn’t pick her up this season. There is no doubt in my mind that Monique is talented, smart and skilled enough to be playing at that level.”

Monique will be joined by other signings that will be announced in the coming weeks. Pre-season training starts for the Jets SCW team on the 6th November 2pm – 4pm at Eric Boardman stadium.
