Sellwood Reaches 350 Game Milestone

Sellwood Reaches 350 Game Milestone

 Sellwood 2

Sunbury Jets Basketball Association stalwart Nathan Sellwood this week notches up his 350th Senior Big V game. Sellwood who started playing for the Jets as a junior in 1985 at the age of 8, began his senior career at 17 and is currently in the division 1 men’s team at the age of 38. Throughout his 22 year senior career Sellwood has won many individual and team accolades, highlighted by 3 Big V Championships (1999, 2008, 2009). He was the league MVP in 2002 as well as the league’s leading scorer averaging 28ppg. He was the rookie of the year in 1999 and was selected to the All Star team on five separate occasions.

He also had briefs stints at Frankston in the South East Australian Basketball League as well as with Sherbrooke and Diamond Valley in the Big V.

Sellwood, a prolific scorer in his prime was a highly skillful player who dominated his opponents and often proved unstoppable. Now he has adapted to a different role leading a very young Jets side and mentoring younger players to help them follow in his footsteps. “Sell might be in to the later stages of his career, but he has not lost any of his competitive spirit. Only last night in practice he was screaming at me to check the score was right so his team could win a practice drill. I love that about him” said current Jets coach Andrew Summerville. “He wants to win, he wants to be on the court as much as possible and he wants to prove people wrong, although I’m not sure he has to prove anything, he’s done it all” added Summerville.

When asked to reflect on his highly decorated and lengthy career, Sellwood said “Being able to reach this milestone is something I will probably reflect on more after the season. If anything, I can think a lot of it can be attributed to my good luck with injury (only 1 missed game) and my ability to prepare for each season accordingly. I want to thank my family, and in particular my wife who has been very accommodating in me playing for as long as I have. The time commitment becomes harder when you have a family, and she has supported me in continuing to play the game I love for as long as I can. I also get a lot of satisfaction in seeing the enjoyment my own children get out of the game, which often makes me remember back to when I was a similar age watching the Jets men playing. Time flies when you’re having fun.”

“Also a big thanks to all my past and present team-mates and coaches, for the laughs, memories and lifelong friendships. I also wish to thank the people of the SBA community, many who have seen my career develop from a young kid to where I am now. Having been fortunate enough to play at other levels with other associations, I can honestly say that there is nowhere better to play than at Sunbury.

It’s been a great ride and one I hope to finish on a high”

The Jets are away this weekend against Casey meaning Sellwood will reach this historic milestone away from his beloved Sunbury. However the Jets return home next Saturday the 28th of May against the Mildura Heat at 8pm where Sellwood will be honored prior to the game. The SBA would like to invite all past players, coaches and fans to get along and support Sellwood and the Jets in what is shaping up to be a great night.

Signings for the 2017 D1M

The Sunbury Jets are excited to announce the signings of three new quality players to their 2017 Division One Men’s squad and the return of two familiar faces.

Damian O’Keefe, Te Puao Silver and Jacob Formosa join Coach Lanard Copeland while Daniel Jackson and Liam Platt return in a new look Jets side.

Coach Lanard had this to say about the new signings;

“The first guy I signed when I got the job was Jacob Formosa. Jacob is a very talented point guard who grew up in Melbourne and attended AUBD Acacemy. He was a standout player that is very quick, has great size and was pursued by many college programs in the U.S. He decided to pass on the college pathway to pursue a professional career in Malta where he has become a great player.”

“The next signing was past Sunbury junior Damian O’Keefe, who is a great shooter that has played Championship level basketball for Whittlesea for the last three years. Damian is a very versatile player and defender that has great range and precision.”

And third singing Te Puao Silver has followed Coach Lanard from the Broncos program to help Coach Lanard with this new look side.

“Te Puao Silver affectionately known as ‘Tips’, is one of the best defenders I’ve seen. He can lock an opponent down on call. He has played for me at Hume City and on top of being a solid basketball player he is a great guy.”

The Sunbury Jets also welcome back Daniel Jackson and Liam Platt from last year’s playoff making team.

“It’s great to have two local guys back in the new restructure of the senior men’s program. Both guys have brought plenty of energy and work ethic to training sessions.”

Damian, Te Puao, Jacob, Daniel and Liam will be joined by other signings that will be announced in the next week.

The SPP has been designed to be in alignment with, and underpin, the teachings and philosophies of the revamped National Performance Program (NPP) and the restructured Victorian National Intensive Training Program (NITP), which will allow for systematic and progressive identification, selection and development of Victorian athletes from 14 to 19 years that is sympathetic to, supportive of and collaborative with the elite programs of Basketball Victoria affiliate association members.

The program will run for 15 weeks and will be led and run by SBA’s Director of Coaching, select SBA Coaches and will have special guest coaches in attendance on occasions. Players involved will be given the opportunity to purchase Victorian NITP training gear that they will train in when on court with the SPP program. Looking through the records of when the program was run last shorts and singlets cost about $50 each. Those who have BV or NITP branded gear will not need to purchase another set unless they choose to. Once we have closed registrations we will follow up with an order form for those who wish to purchase NITP/BV branded gear.

The cost for each athlete will be $250.00 this is not including the NITP uniform. SBA players in 1st teams will be given the first opportunity to participate and register in the SPP. If space and resources allow it will then be offered to targeted players in other teams and age groups but will be at the Director of coaching’s discretion.
