Connie

The Sunbury Jets are pleased to announce another key signing for its 2016 campaign with the signing of 6 foot forward Connie Poletti.

Connie was recently a part of Coach Kennedy Kereama’s National team as a development player and from there accepted a scholarship to play junior college with the Crowder College Roughriders unfortunately the experience didn’t go to plan and she made the tough decision to go back to New Zealand. However after making contact with Coach Kennedy and asking if he knew of any opportunities to play in Australia, he made the suggestion of moving to Melbourne and playing with the Jets for the 2016 season.

After averaging 12.3 points at a 61.7 FG% and 9.5 rebounds per game in Junior college it would seem the timing was almost perfect for the young international.

When asked about the opportunity Connie said “The timing was perfect as the college experience just wasn’t working out for me and I still wanted to play basketball, but the opportunities weren’t available for me in New Zealand. I am really looking forward to working with the team and club this season. I have heard great things about the club and want to make a positive impact on the team this season.”

“Connie’s signing to the team was unexpected but was a very welcomed addition to the program. I was saddened to hear the college experience didn’t work out how she would have liked it to, but was happy to offer her any opportunity to play here. She is a player who will really grow in this program and could play here for many years. Connie will bring some added interior toughness to the team, is an excellent rebounder and finisher, with a very solid mid-range game. I believe she has a lot of potential and will flourish learning and training with Jess Bygate and our other forward contingent.” said Jets Coach Kennedy Kereama.

Sunbury Jets Sign 6’5 Big Man from New Zealand

Mitchell.jpg

The Sunbury Jets Basketball Association is pleased to announce the signing of Mitchell Newton a 6’5 forward from New Zealand for the 2016 Big V season.

Mitchell has spent the last 4 seasons playing for the Southland Sharks in the NZNBL, where he won 2 NZNBL Championships. He also represented New Zealand on the international stage as a junior. Last year Mitchell toured the Philippines and Taiwan as part of a New Zealand select squad under the banner of the Wellington Saints NZNBL team.

“Mitchell is a promising talent who will be a surprising addition to our roster. He had limited opportunities playing on a star studded championship team in the NZNBL so will flourish in our team with greater opportunities and responsibilities. He has a rare blend of size, speed and athleticism and has already proven at practice that he will have an impact on the court this season.” said Jets Head Coach, Andrew Summerville.

Mitchell said “I’m excited to come to Australia and play basketball at the Big V level. The NZNBL is a short season and didn’t provide me with the year round opportunities I am looking for. Coach Summerville approached me with this great opportunity, and thought it would be a good decision going forward with my basketball. I am looking forward to being a part of the Sunbury basketball association and playing for the Jets.”

Mitchell will also be involved in coaching in the association with our Aussie Hoops, Flight Path and Sporting Schools programs.

Mitchell becomes the first major signing for the 2016 Jets Big V team with and American import and further signings to be announced in the coming weeks.

Sunbury Jets Sign Sharp Shooting American Import

IshSa

The Sunbury Jets Basketball Association is pleased to announce the signing of Ish Sanders a 6’2 shooting guard from the U.S.A for the 2016 Big V season.

Sanders originally from Tennessee comes to Sunbury via Tampa, Florida. Sanders played 4 years of collegiate basketball at Carson Newman College in Tennessee. During his college career Sanders was a standout shooter, scoring a record setting 51 points in his first ever college game. He went on to become the all-time leading scorer in Carson Newman history and was also ranked second nationally in 3 point made baskets per game.

Since college Sanders has also played professionally in Kosovo and Slovakia. He was invited to try out for the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA Development League where he was rated a top 10 performer by NBA coaches.

Sanders already has a small connection to the Jets. Sanders played in college for Head Coach Chuck Benson who current Jets Head Coach Andrew Summerville assisted in Tennessee during his college coaching career.

“I am really excited that Ish will be joining us this year. I have met him a few times over his college career on my visits to Tennessee and I have always loved the way he plays. We have kept in touch over the years so it is great to finally reconnect with him on the court. Having worked with his college coach I know that Ish is not only a great basketball player, but is also of exceptional character. Coach Benson would not have recruited him otherwise.” said Jets Head Coach, Andrew Summerville.

Since returning from Europe, Sanders has been working out daily awaiting his next opportunity to play professionally overseas. Sanders said “I am eager to continue my basketball career with the Sunbury Jets and I'm very thrilled to play for a great organization and under a well-respected coach. I'm looking forward to being a part of this team in hopes of having a great season.

Ish will also be involved in coaching in the association with the Aussie Hoops, Flight Path and Sporting Schools programs.

Ish joins 6’5 Mitchell Newton from New Zealand as the clubs major signings so far for the 2016 Jets.
