2017/18 VJBL Coaching Applications

The Sunbury Junior Jets Coaches and Assistant Coaches

Vacancies for the 2017/18 Championship Season

The Sunbury Jets Basketball Association is seeking interest from Coaches with prior experience coaching basketball to fill key coaching roles within our Junior Jets Program for the 2017 – 2018 season.

Vacancies exist in all age groups and across all levels of Basketball in both our boys and girls programs’. We are looking for experienced coaches who wish to become an integral part of the Junior Jets Program.

In addition to vacancies for experienced representative coaches we are also seeking Assistant Coaches for all teams; this role is regarded as a development role and would suit applicants with limited coaching experience and a desire to improve their coaching skills under some of the best coaches in the association.

The aim of the Junior Jets Program is to promote the game of basketball within our community and to develop players to compete at the highest level.

Coaching positions involve a commitment to Friday night games, Sunday training and mid week training (for some teams) during the VJBL season. Teams may also play in the Bendigo and Ballarat tournaments during the season.

Expectations of all interested coaches are as follows:

  • All coaches MUST hold or be willing to complete a National Accreditation Scheme coach’s course prior to the start of the VJBLseason.
  • Adhere to the Basketball Victoria Coaches Code ofConduct
  • Complete a Working with Children (WWC) Form and a VJBL Statutory DeclarationForm
    • Assist at the Sunbury Jets representative trials in various age groups and work with fellow Sunbury Jets coaches in selecting the finalteams.
    • All Coaches will be highly organised, be willing to work as a team and possess the ability to teach basketball at the appropriatelevel.
    • All first team coaches must be willing to work as a lead coach with all second, third and fourth team coaches.
    • Must attend domestic games and finals to encourage indentified players to come and try out.
    • Must attend ALL Coaches Meetings and Development opportunities as requested by theSBA.
    • All Coaches must work under the guidelines, club curriculum, standards and expectations of the SBA and Director of Coaching.

Applicants should fill out the online application form https://goo.gl/forms/7fpgZsTY5LvWj1T13

2017/18 VJBL Teams

The Sunbury Basketball Association is pleased to announce the following players have been selected for each team for the 2017/18 VJBL season.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

TEAM SELECTIONS / CHANGES:

Teams are not final until the beginning of Grading phase two (2). This means that coaches can make changes to their teams to promote or demote due to injury, lack of performance or change to better balance teams. This again will be at the coaches’ discretion but will need to be approved by the Director of Coaching before any changes are made.

TEAM MANAGERS:

A parent from each team is required to manage the team for the VJBL season. You can approach the coach of your team to enquire about the role. For more information on the duties and responsibilities of team manager you can contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

PRACTICE SESSIONS:
All
teams u12s to u18s practice every Sunday for approximately 2 hours as per the master practice plan at Boardman Stadium. Each team will also have an additional mid-week training session that will be determined by the coach and players availability. Players are to arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled practice time and be mentally prepared for rigorous and challenging practice sessions. They should be dressed in the Jets reversible practice singlet and suitable basketball shorts.

Players who do not train at either session or show up late or leave early no matter the excuse will not start the game on Friday. They cannot be subbed in until after the five (5) minute mark of the firstquarter. Coaches reserve the right to not play players at all who do not practice both sessions or consistently miss trainings no matter the excuse. For players who arrive late or leave trainings early on a consistent basis, the coach has the right to reduce their court time. It is up to each individual coach to police and enforce this with his or her players.

Players ARE NOT to leave early from our trainings to attend other sports. Doing so will result in the Director of Coaching evaluating your position at the club. Also as a consequence the player may not take the court the following Friday until the second half of the game. This will be at each coach’s discretion as to whether they choose to exercise this penalty. You are making a commitment to the club to play REPRESENTATIVE BASKETBALL in a STATE-WIDE COMPETITION and this comes with certain responsibilities to your Club & Team. Domestic hockey, football or netball etc. Comes second to Jets training.

All training sessions start on the 22nd of October and mid-week trainings start the week after. Coaches/Managers will need to contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to arrange their mid-week training. You can find your teams training time on the website. or below.

2017 18 Court allocations for Sunday rep trainings

COURT TIME:

Court time will be assessed and rewarded based on attitude, behaviour, team needs, strategies and tactics employed by the coach and the Director of Coaching, defensive match ups and consistent performances in games and trainings, Due to the nature of Representative Basketball, players cannot be guaranteed equal court time. However, parents who are concerned with their child’s role on the team should arrange a suitable time to discuss the matter (politely) with their Team Manager to organise a meeting with coaching staff. This is to be done at an arranged time before or after training & NOT straight after the game. NOT DOING SO CAN RESULT IN SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES.

ACCEPTING YOUR POSITION:

All players or parents are required to email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to accept their position in the team by Oct 19th. Coaches will be given contact information of each player in their team so they can follow up and introduce themselves.

JUNIOR JETS:

Finally, our junior jets chair will be in touch with more information in regard to your child’s selection, so please check your emails regularly.

2018 Jnr Jets

What is Junior Jets?

Junior Jets is the opportunity for your child to take their basketball to the next level and compete in Australia’s largest junior competition, The Melbourne United Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL). VJBL is played on a Friday night in a large range of venues across the state. Each week over 1000 junior teams compete to be the best in state. This equates to over 500 games across 150 courts. This is the breeding ground for Victorian State players and many successful players have come out of this system; Mathew Dellavedova, Andrew Bogut, Andrew Gaze, Penny Taylor and Michelle Timms just to name a few. Competing in such a prestigious competition instils in your child a sense of pride, raises self-esteem, and will develop new friendships that will last a life time.

Jets teams are selected via a tryout process. During the VJBL Season Sunbury Jets team play against a range of other associations such as Melbourne Tigers, Geelong Supercats, and Diamond Valley Eagles. Once selected Jets players are required to train twice a week (generally one session on a Sunday and the other mid-week). The representative Jets program is available for all SBA domestic players. Jets players DO NOT have to leave their domestic teams to play.

This is your chance to represent the Sunbury Basketball Association in one of the following divisions:

  • Victorian Junior State Championship (VC) (Top teams go to national champs)
  • Victorian Junior Basketball League (Div 1,2,3, & 4)
  • North West Regional Competition

During the VJBL season each Jets player will get access to quality coaching from qualified coaches. We are lucky enough to have access to coaches who have worked at the highest levels of the sport.

Try out information:

Each player MUST ATTEND both open try outs to be considered / selected for the invite only try outs. In cases where players are injured, or have a state / international basketball commitment they will be excused for this. However could be asked to present a medical certificate or letter of selection from the state or national body. If you cannot attend any of the open try outs for any other reason you must contact Junior Jets at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  and our Director of Coaching Kennedy Kereama at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  and explain why. This will then be taken into cosideration on a case by case basis at the SBA's discretion.
