Milner - Sellwood Hume City Challenge Shield.

Broadmeadows Basketball (Broncos) and Sunbury Basketball (Jets) are proud to jointly announce an initiative for the Hume City LGA designed to bring communities together through sport.

Broadmeadows Basketball (Broncos) and Sunbury Basketball (Jets) are proud to jointly announce an initiative for the Hume City LGA designed to bring communities together through sport.

Although the Broncos and Jets are dispersed across the LGA, the concept of introducing a perpetual challenge shield, as a focus for their competitive encounters on the basketball court and to showcase the sport at the Big V elite Championship level, was born out of the Clubs’ desire to connect more deeply with the diverse community that comprises Hume City.

“By establishing a challenge series such as this” said Jets President Glenn Ogston “we are hoping that the current supporter base for both Clubs can broaden our collective reach to engage those sectors of our community yet to experience this great family sport.”

Broncos President Peter Jackson echoed those comments, adding “It’s great that Sunbury and Broadmeadows have collaborated to stage an annual sports event that serves to reinforce positive community values for Hume City through the examples of teamwork and development pathways.”

The Shield has been named after individuals who have not only achieved accolades for their achievements in basketball but have also been long-standing residential members of Hume City who continue to work tirelessly in advocating for, and implementing, sports based inclusive community programs.

Sharin Milner’s basketball history spans  junior domestic and junior representative participation with the Broadmeadows Association (winning the U18 State title) and progressing to a senior representative playing career that produced several Big V State Championships and a WNBL title. Sharin is currently working as Project Manager for the Association driving community engagement and youth leadership programs focused on the diverse, marginalised and under-represented areas of Dallas and Hume Central.

A stalwart of Sunbury basketball from youth participation to a storied senior playing career, which included State titles, All Star 5 selections and a Big V MVP, Nathan Sellwood has continued to influence the interaction of Jets basketball with the community they service. As the Vice President of the Association, Nathan’s leadership extends beyond basketball, with strong contributions throughout the community, positively impacting both the Association and the region.

The Shield event format will feature points awarded for wins from Big V fixtured games between the Broncos and Jets mens and womens Championship Division teams in 2025. Both Associations are committed to marketing and promoting these contests to their respective catchment areas to ensure that all sectors of those communities can experience an entertainment spectacle showcasing the best features of elite sport, including post-game interaction with the players.

The inaugural Milner-Sellwood Hume City Challenge Shield will kick off on Saturday, March 29th, at Boardman Stadium, Court 1. Round 1 features a thrilling double-header, with the Championship Women playing at 6:00 PM, followed by the Championship Men at 8:00 PM.
